- WHAT IS TCM?
-
- Since PKWARE released PKZIP v2.04, PKZIP has one of the best, if not
- THE best, compression routines (ie. the resulting archive is the
- smallest in size) - beating both ARJ and LZH. Unfortunately, most
- PKZIP users use the default Normal Compression option to zip their
- files, thus not fully realizing the advantage that PKZIP 2.04 provides.
- By converting all your zipfiles to Maximum Compression, you can
- dramatically decrease the size of your archives.
-
- TCM is a utility that allows people who use PKZIP 2.04g to safely and
- efficiently convert all .ZIP files to Maximum Compression, thus saving
- valuable hard disk and backup media storage space. If you constantly
- work with and backup a large number of zipfiles, then TCM is for you!
-
-
- FEATURES:
-
- - Run unattended from batch files
- - Verify integrity (CRC error-free) in zipfiles before processing
- - Test zipfiles and then convert to Maximum Compression if necessary
- - Convert ANY zipfile including those zipped with PKZIP 1.10 and prior
- - Volume Labels and stored paths within zipfiles processed safely
- - Hidden and System files within zipfiles processed safely
- - Delete ANY unwanted files from your zipfiles through a text list
- - Insert or remove Zip Comments from zipfiles
- - Insert a file of your choice to zipfiles
- - Add Authenticity Verification (-AV) stamp on zipfiles
- - Strip -AV signature from zipfiles if you choose 'No' -AV stamping
- - Use McAfee's SCAN on zipfiles to scan for virus
- - Complete configurability for the above options
- - Display statistics of processed files
- - Process files across LAN networks
-
-
- REQUIREMENTS:
-
- - 286/386/486/Pentium systems
- - DOS 3.30 and above
- TCM was tested extensively on DOS-based systems as well as LAN
- networks (using Ethernet and LANtastic AI 5.0) and proven to work
- reliably. I do not use OS/2 or Windows on my systems so TCM may
- not be compatible with either.
- - Free hard disk space of 5 times the largest zipfile you are processing
- (ie. if the largest zipfile you are processing is 1 mb in size, then
- you will need at least 5 mb of free hard disk space)
-
- (Mandatory):
- - PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE version 2.04g from PKWARE, Inc.
- - STRIPAV.EXE (supplied with TCM archive)
- - PRUNE.COM (supplied with TCM archive)
-
- (Optional):
- - Registered copy of PKZIP version 2.04c (if you want -AV stamping)
- - SCAN.EXE from McAfee Associates (if you want virus scanning)
-
-
- USAGE:
-
- TCM <Enter> <-- when in active directory where zipfiles are to
- be processed.
- or
-
- TCM [drive:path] <-- process zipfiles located in the specified dir.
-
- Example:
- TCM c:\files\dwnld
-
-
- LOCATION OF FILES:
-
- (Mandatory)
-
- - The following files should be located in a directory defined in your
- PATH statement located in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- ∙ PKZIP.EXE version 2.04g
- ∙ PKUNZIP.EXE version 2.04g
- ∙ SCAN.EXE latest version (if you activate the SCAN feature)
-
- - The two external utilities included with the TCM distribution archive,
- STRIPAV.EXE and PRUNE.COM, may be placed in any directory of your
- choice.
-
- - TCM.EXE and TCMSETUP.EXE may be placed in any directory of your choice
- as long as they are in the same directory.
-
- (Optional)
-
- - A text file containing a list of filenames that you want TCM to delete
- unwanted files. This file should be in the format of one filename per
- line. Filename and path defined by you in TCMSETUP.
-
- - A file that you would like TCM to insert into processed zips. Can be
- text or binary. Filename and path defined by you in TCMSETUP.
-
- - A small text file to be included as zip comment (headers) in your
- zipfiles. This must be a plain text file, no ANSI characters.
- Filename and path defined by you in TCMSETUP.
-
-
- CONFIGURING TCM:
-
- *** TCMSETUP will abort if it fails to locate the necessary files
- during setup!
-
- Make sure you've placed all the files listed above in their appropriate
- directories >before< you run TCMSETUP.
-
- Detailed explanation of each option is displayed during setup.
-
-
- REGISTRATION/DISTRIBUTION:
-
- No registration is necessary. TCM is FREEWARE and may be used and
- distributed freely.
-
- However, the sale of TCM for profit, either alone or together with
- other software or hardware is prohibited without prior permission
- from the author.
-
- Any software dealer or library may distribute the entire TCM package
- in unmodified form for a fee as long as the price charged for the disk
- containing TCM does not exceed US $5.00.
-
-
- FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS:
-
- Upcoming release of TCM will include the ability to:
- - Convert LZH and ARJ files to ZIP format
- - Use of EMS/XMS to reduce memory requirements
- - Recognize a single filename passed in the command line to TCM
- so that BBS sysops can use TCM to process uploads from their BBS
-
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- A few words from the author:
-
- This utility was written out of necessity. I found myself constantly using
- several archive shells and ZIP utilities to process files uploaded to my
- Bulletin Board System and it became more and more time consuming as the
- number of files increased. As a result, a crude version of TCM - version
- 0.10α, was written to automate this mundane task. Several brave users on
- my BBS tested it and encouraged me to release it to the public. Thanks to
- them, you now have the finished product.
-
- TCM merges the features found in several utilities and improved on them.
- While TCM will be most beneficial to sysops, non-sysops can undoubtedly put
- it to good use too. Converting all your zipfiles to Maximum Compression will
- definitely save you substantial amounts of storage space in the long run.
-
- You can configure TCM to work on your zipfiles in any desired manner. For
- example, sysops might choose to insert an ad file, add their zip comments
- and strip all AV signature while non-sysops might choose to strip all their
- files of unnecessary ads, zip comments, etc. and still convert everything to
- Max Compression.
